In memoriam: John Renbourn / Religious Expression In Folk Music

10 p.m. to Midnight Host: Steve Winters

A two part show. The first hour is devoted to a cursory retrospective of the career of John Renbourn, the brilliant British guitarist who died at age 70 on March 24 in Hawick, Scotland. Not only was Renbourn an virtuoso solo guitarist who deftly integrated folk, classical, blues and jazz into his music, but his duo work with Bert Jansch in the 1960s and early ’70s was groundbreaking for folk music. The second hour features sacred music as two of the world's major religions observe events this week that are at their essence. Today at sundown Jews began a celebration of Passover, which recalls the flight of Israelites from slavery and bondage in Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. Most of Christianity this week is marking the Passion of Jesus Christ, climaxing in His Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Just as Passover celebrates liberation of Jews from oppression, so Easter celebrates the freeing of Christian believers from the bondage of sin because Jesus took it upon Himself on the cross and triumphed over sin.
